The world has no more fresh water than it did 2000 years ago,
when the population was less than 3% of its present size.

rainbarrelThe "How to Build and Install a Rain Barrel workshop:
Adapting wooden and plastic barrels into Rain Barrels" reduces pollution to creeks.

For every inch of rain that falls on a 1,000 square feet roof area, you can possibly collect approximately 600 gallons of rainwater.
Rain barrels not only improve water quality of streams but also save money on your water bill.
Rain water is chlorine-free water, which plants prefer.

October 2008:
2008 Fall Watershed-Wide Clean Up
rainbarrelOur First Annual Watershed Wide Clean Up was a great success. This was a productive and community building day and the creek is smiling from our efforts. The event resulted in 7 clean up site locations and attracted 92 volunteers who removed tons of trash throughout the watershed.

rainbarrelSpecial thanks to the event sponsors for providing give-a-ways, supplies and logistical support: H.G. Hill Realty, Publix, Starbucks, TrailWatch, Greenways for Nashville, Metro Public Works, Metro Parks and Metro Water Services.

Our fantastic volunteer groups included:
Friends of Richland Creek (Lions Head area- Post Place Condominiums), Kowalski Chiropractic (108 Harding Place), Warner Park Community Association WPCA and Troop 42 and Troop 6 Boy Scouts, Richland Creek Greenway (RCG) TrailWatch (Greenway and creek area), Earth Revolution (West Park at Morrow Road), and Richland Creek Watershed Alliance (Whitebridge TrailHead).

June 2008:
2008 Spring Creek Clean Up
adopt
Thirty-one volunteers removed 1.55 tons of trash from this short segment of Richland Creek with contagious team spirit. These folks were from numerous neighborhoods throughout our watershed; including our Councilman Jason Holleman and West End Middle School Student Leader, Callie Hendrickson.

The total refuse weight above does not include the cut trees volunteers removed from the stream bed. Because cut trees and brush do not go to the landfill, these piles were left out of the roll-off dumpster for Metro brush pick-up.

The sponsors for our event were:
Harris Teeter on Highway 100 (snacks and fruit); Kroger on Charlotte Pike (drinks and ice); Blinker-Lite (porta-potty); Jack in the Box at White Bridge (sandwiches); and Metro Public Works and Water Services, in conjunction with the Great American Clean Up, (T-shirts, gloves, trash bags, promotion and refuse pick up).

May 2007:
RCWA/WEMS Stormwater Stenciling in Sylvan Park

RCWA Coordinator/WEMS liason, VIcky Amann and her son John, and Student Steward Leader, Callie Hendrickson. The project is beginnining their work in the Sylvan Park Neighborhood.

The stenciling says: "No Dumping- this water drains to Richland Creek Watershed," with a catfish in the center.

West End Middle School partners with RCWA
as student stewards. See the WEMS rain barrel at right. Two 7th grade science students have taken leadership roles.  They are WEMS students Callie Hendrickson and Jacob Krantz under Dr. Cliff Cockerham’s supervision. RCWA would like to thank Vicky Amann who took a leadership role as a parent and RCWA volunteer to make this partnership possible.

October 2007:
RCWA joins  with TrailWatch Volunteer Program for Creek and  Greenway Cleanup

Richland Creek CleanupStarbucks (White Bridge location) provided coffee for event volunteers.
